Rockers Digest welcomes a guest review & photos (compact camera shots from crowd) from good friend Simon Penaluna…
A great night of nostalgia in Norwich on Tuesday Night with Dio performing in front of an enthusiastic, nearly packed out crowd, for almost 2 hours with a combination of Rainbow (not enough!!!), Sabbath and his own classics.
Early highlights of the evening were Tarot Woman - great way to start the gig, and Sign of the Southern Cross, albeit a shortened version of the original.
A great reception for the Holy Diver album which still stands up today as a classic rock album. Only comment would be that the album is pretty short (I still have the vinyl!!) and the band tended to pad a few of the songs out a little longer than the originals - sometimes it worked, other times maybe not. Saying that, Dio's voice is still on top form (are we surprised?) and the rest of the band put in a great performance, particularly Doug Aldrich on axe - great work on Invisible, and Scott Warren on Keyboards, Rainbow in the Dark. Even the drum solo was kept succinct!
A quick break and then back on with Heaven and Hell, Man On The Silver Mountain and Long Live Rock and Roll which pleased the older Rainbow fans and then finishing with We Rock. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable evening and always a pleasure to see a true professional.
Dio set list:
Tarot Woman / The Sign Of The Southern Cross / Stand Up & Shout / Holy Diver / Gypsy / Caught In The Middle / Don't Talk To Strangers / Straight Through The Heart / Invisible / Rainbow In The Dark / Shame On The Night / Heaven & Hell / Man On The Silver Mountain / Long Live Rock & Roll / Last In Line / We Rock
