Illuminatus
24 September 2009
The Gaff, London
Tonight’s gig was supposed to be the penultimate show of a co-headline tour featuring Illuminatus and Rise To Addiction. However, due to a family illness, Rise To Addiction had cancelled their remaining appearances leaving Illuminatus to complete the tour alone. To further complicate things, it appeared that there had been a double booking at The Gaff, with another gig scheduled to take place tonight. The solution was to let all the bands play, with Illuminatus sticking to their pre arranged 8.30pm stage time. Now this worked fine for me, as with a very early flight the next day I was set to leave early anyway.
Certainly Illuminatus seemed to be channelling the frustrations of the day into their set, with the towering riffs of instrumental opener The Wrath Of The Lambs feeling particularly menacing. Captive State felt more up-tempo than its recorded version, with Julio Taylor’s gravelly roar of “We’re hopeless” really echoing the desperation of the song’s lyrics.
A new song titled Glasnost continues the band’s tradition of strong songwriting, before the whole of the new three track EP The Rising Tide was aired. Illuminatus dedicated roadwork paid dividends with the band locked and this was one of the most pumped up performance I have witnessed by them. Calls for Wargasm from the band’s debut full length were rewarded and whilst it may have been a difficult show for the band it was a rewarding one to attend.
Illuminatus set list:
The Wrath Of The Lambs / Captive State / Glasnost / Cave In / Red / The Rising Tide / Wargasm
